Message from Chief of Police Jorge Zamora:
I’m deeply grateful for the people, experiences, and community that have been such an important part of my career in law enforcement, but after more than 30 years with the Watsonville Police Department, I have made the decision to retire in August of this year.
I began this journey at the young age of 15 as a police cadet, never imagining it would lead to a lifelong career filled with purpose, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. In 1996, I became a full-time officer and worked my way through the ranks—serving in patrol, SWAT, narcotics, detectives, and as a youth mentor and instructor. In 2022, I had the absolute honor and privilege to become Watsonville’s 16th Chief of Police—the first first-generation Mexican-American to hold this role.
Thank you, Watsonville, for your trust, support, and partnership. I am especially grateful to this community for believing in a young man who grew up in a neighborhood where gang violence was prevalent and expectations for success for children of farmworkers were low. The odds were against me, but you gave me the opportunity to rise, serve, and lead.
I am especially grateful to all of the Watsonville Police Officers, Staff, and Volunteers who continue to work hard each day to make a difference in our community. Leading this department and serving the community I love has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
Though I’m retiring from the badge, my heart will always remain with this community.

Estoy profundamente agradecido por las personas, las experiencias y la comunidad que han sido una parte tan importante en mi carrera como policía, pero después de más de 30 años en el Departamento de Policía de Watsonville, he decidido jubilarme en agosto de este año.
Comencé esta trayectoria a los 15 años como cadete de policía, sin imaginar que me llevaría a una carrera para toda la vida llena de propósito, desafíos y experiencias inolvidables. En 1996, me convertí en oficial de tiempo completo y fui ascendiendo de rango, sirviendo en patrullaje, SWAT, narcóticos, detectives y como mentor e instructor de jóvenes. En 2022, tuve el gran honor y privilegio de convertirme en el decimosexto Jefe de Policía de Watsonville, el primer mexicoamericano de primera generación en ocupar este cargo.
Gracias, Watsonville, por su confianza, apoyo y colaboración. Estoy especialmente agradecido con esta comunidad por creer en un joven que creció en un vecindario donde la violencia de pandillas era prevalente y las expectativas de éxito para los hijos de campesinos eran bajas. Tenía las probabilidades en mi contra, pero ustedes me dieron la oportunidad de superarme, servir y liderar.
Estoy especialmente agradecido con todos los Oficiales, el Personal y los Voluntarios de la Policía de Watsonville que continúan trabajando arduamente cada día para marcar la diferencia en nuestra comunidad. Liderar este departamento y servir a la comunidad que amo ha sido uno de los mayores honores de mi vida.
Aunque me jubilo de la policía, mi corazón siempre estará con esta comunidad.
