An alarming crime tactic has made its way to Watsonville — it’s known as “bank jugging,” and it involves thieves often waiting in bank parking lots or near ATMs to target people carrying cash. They then follow their victims from the bank to their next destination, creating an opportunity to steal their money.
Our Officers responded to what we now believe was an attempted “bank jugging” incident Wednesday afternoon. An employee from a grocery store on the 1900 block of Main Street alerted the victim about a sharp object placed under one of her car tires. The two suspects fled the scene in a black Toyota Prius when they realized they had been spotted and that photos and video of their car had been taken.
The victim explained to our Officers that she had gone to the bank before going to the grocery store. We believe the suspects attempted to create a distraction, such as a flat tire, to get their hands on the victim’s money.
While we continue to investigate, our Officers have shared information with law enforcement agencies across the state.
In the meantime, we ask that you please stay vigilant.

• Before getting into your car, do a quick tire check
• Look for anyone following you when driving to your next location
• If you get a flat, drive to a busy, well-lit area before stopping

Una táctica delictiva alarmante ha llegado a Watsonville — conocida en inglés como “bank jugging”, y consiste en ladrones esperando en los estacionamientos de los bancos o cerca de los cajeros automáticos para aprovecharse de personas que llevan dinero en efectivo. Luego siguen a sus víctimas desde el banco hasta su próximo destino, creando una oportunidad para robarles su dinero.
Nuestros Oficiales respondieron a lo que ahora creemos que fue un intento de “bank jugging” el miércoles por la tarde. Un empleado de una tienda en la cuadra 1900 de Main Street alertó a la víctima sobre un objeto afilado colocado debajo de una de las llantas de su carro. Los dos sospechosos huyeron de la escena en un Toyota Prius negro cuando se dieron cuenta de que los habían visto y que se habían tomado fotos y videos de su carro.
La víctima explicó a nuestros Oficiales que había ido al banco antes de ir a la tienda. Creemos que los sospechosos intentaron crear una distracción, como una llanta ponchada, para robar el dinero de la víctima.
En lo que continuamos investigando, nuestros Oficiales han compartido información con las agencias policiales de todo el estado.
Mientras tanto, le pedimos que se mantenga alerta.
• Esté siempre atento a su entorno
• Antes de subirse a su carro, revise las llantas
• Esté atento a cualquier persona que lo siga cuando conduzca hacia su próximo destino
• Si se le poncha una llanta, conduzca hasta una zona transitada y bien iluminada antes de detenerse
